You can stick fingers in year ears and yell blah blah blah all you want, but that won’t stop the advance of electric powertrains on vehicles. And while cars have made the largest advances, it could very well be that motorcycles are even better suited for the alternative power set-up. First of all, bikes are lighter which means they require smaller batteries. Second, the range can be much further because of this lightness. Third, the batteries can be easily swapped out — which means you can park your bike on the street, bring the battery pack up with to your apartment, and charge it while your eating frozen burritos and power-watching a House Of Cards marathon. Yamaha is going forward full force into the world of EV bikes, as they will unveil a slew of electric concepts at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The PESI (above) and PEDI (below) are each made to handle their respective terrains, in this case street and dirt. They are powered by a Yamaha Smart Power Module unit with a monocoque structure that also functions as the frame. Both models are also equipped with features like a transmission with manual and automatic modes, a removable battery for easy replacement and various types of smartphone information service functions. More info as the bikes make their debut later this month.
